Bloodstain Pattern Analysis
Bloodstain
pattern analysis is a component of crime scene investigation that deals
with the analysis and interpretation of the patterns of blood
biological evidence left at crime scenes and upon clothing, tools or
weapons. This analysis is often invaluable in helping determine the
series of events leading up to, during and after a crime event. The
analysis may incorporate the movements of both victims and suspects
alike, the scenario of conflict between two or more individuals, and
the manner in which any tools or weapons were used during the crime.
Bloodstains may be involved with crime events such as burglary, where
the suspect becomes injured through negligence in committing the crime,
or in cases involving physical contact between individuals.
In
the first instance, bloodstain pattern analysis can be made from
detailed photographic or videographic records and reports of the crime
scene itself and individual evidence items such as weapons or clothing.
It
is possible to perform bloodstain pattern analysis of previously
unexamined crime events, and also to review previously conducted
bloodstain pattern analyses, to ensure that they were conducted and
interpreted correctly with the correct employment of correct methods.
It is also possible for Defence Forensics to re-visit crime scenes
directly to ensure that they were fully documented and correctly
interpreted, with sufficient samples taken for subsequent forensic
analysis.
